6. Editors
There are five editors in KwikText. They are alike except for a few minor features. Each editor lets you create, modify, and save text material. Each editor keeps track of the files you've created. You don't have to worry about where material is stored or how to retrieve it.
To access one of the editors from the application menu, first click Edit, then:
- For the Template Editor, click Edit Template.
- For the Selection List Editor, click Edit Selection List .
- For the Subject List Editor, click Edit Subject List .
- For the File Editor, click Edit File .
- For the Supplemental Editor, click Edit Supplement .
The Edit Template button is used so frequently that it's also available as a button above the Template Window.
When you click one of the above buttons, the editor pops up, ready for you to type. When you're done, just click Done. The editor disappears and your work is automatically saved.
Editor Buttons
- Undo: Undoes prior edit. If you make an error, click Undo. You can undo up to 100 edit actions.
- Redo: Redoes prior undo action. If you press Undo by mistake, click Redo.

- Load: Loads a new file. When you click Load, a dialog box pops up in which you can type or select a new file to load. You can change directories by selecting another, but the file will be saved as part of the current project. The old file will remain as-is.

- Save As: Lets you save the file you are editing under another name. When you click Save As, a dialog box pops up in which you can type or select a new name. You can change directories by selecting another, but the file will be saved as part of the current project. KwikText always adds the extension ".txt" to file names so they can be opened by any text editor.
- Cancel: Lets you cancel the editing session without saving any of the changes.
- Done: Saves and closes the editing window. Press this button when you are finished editing.
- X: Located at the top-right corner of the window. Clicking X is equivalent to clicking Cancel.

Template Editor
Use this to edit templates.
The Template Editor contains a menu bar and a few extra buttons:
The Menu Bar, containing two menu items, lets you control how material pasted from another document is formatted. These options are provided to save you time when you paste material from web pages or other documents. They automate what you might otherwise have to do manually.
Under the Inserts menu item, you can select one of the following options:
- Insert As Block: Material is inserted unchanged, that is, it is not made into single or multiple paragraphs. You can still modify the content as described below. This option will insert each line of text as a separate template node.
- Insert As Single Paragraph: Material is inserted as a single paragraph. In addition, you can modify the content as described below. Use this option when you want a large block of text to appear as a single template node.
- Insert As Multiple Paragraphs: Material is inserted as multiple paragraphs. In addition, you can modify the content as described below. Use this option when you want each paragraph of a large block of text to appear as one template node.
The difference between a line and a paragraph is this: A line contains a single linefeed, whereas a paragraph contains two linefeeds in a row. Paragraphs, therefore, appear to be separated by blank lines.
Under the Modifications menu item, you can change the formatting for each insert as follows:
- Despace: Extraneous leading and following spaces are removed. Use this option when you are inserting text from a web page or other document that is tabbed or indented.
- Add Brackets: Places inserted material in square brackets, so it shows up as node content. Usually used along with Acquisition Number.
- Add Acquisition Number: Adds a sequential acquisition number, as a label, before each block of inserted text.
Additional buttons above the template editor are as follows:
- Update: Saves all edits and updates template to reflect all changes.
- Indent: Indents the currently selected line or lines of text.
- Unindent: Unindents the currently selected line or lines of text.
- Wrap Text: Wraps or unwraps lines of text so you can see them as a single line or series of lines.
- Override Prefs: Lets you temporarily override the insertion preferences. Click this button when you want to copy and paste blocks of text from within the template editor itself. Then click the button again to resume inserting text, usually from a web site or other document, with acquisition numbers and brackets.
Supplemental Editor
Acts just like a Template Editor with a few differences:
- You can open up as many Supplemental Editors as you like.
- Doesn't automatically load or save the current template.
- Doesn't include Update button.
