8. Buttons

Here's a brief description of all KwikText buttons, in alphabetical order:

  1. About: Access from the Help menu item. Displays information about the version of KwikText installed on your computer. After you've reviewed the information, click OK and the panel will disappear.

  2. Add Acquisition Number: Access from Template Editor or Supplemental Editor menu: Select Modifications, then select from the drop-down list of alternatives. When Add Acquisition Number is checked, each block of inserted text (using Ctrl-V) will be preceded by a 6 digit acquisition number. The number increments each time text is inserted. The acquisition number acts as a temporary label for the inserted text and is meant to be changed later to something more useful. You will usually want the Add Brackets button to be checked when using acquisition numbers.

  3. Add Brackets: Access from Template Editor or Supplemental Editor menu: Select Modifications, then select from the drop-down list of alternatives. Encloses whatever you are inserting or pasting from the clipboard with square brackets. For example, with this option selected, if you copy text from a website or other document, then paste using Ctrl-V, your text material will be shown as [xxx], where "xxx" is the text you are pasting.

  4. All Projects: Access from the Search Project Window toolbar. When selected, the button is highlighted. When you start a new search all templates in all projects are searched.

  5. As RTF: Access from the Export menu item. Exports the material in the Composition Window in RTF or "Rich Text Format". A file that's exported in RTF format can be loaded into Microsoft Word with its formatting intact. So, for example, words displayed in bold in the window will be displayed as bold in Word. When you click and paste, on the other hand, some of the formatting is lost. When you click As RTF, a Save window pops up. Type a name that you want to save the file to. The file is saved in the directory \Data\KwikText\Project\Reports\xxx.rtf, where xxx is the name of the file you typed.

  6. As Spreadsheet: Access from the Export menu item. Exports the all the records associated with one template as a tab delimited text file. The text file can be read by a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel, and converted to a spreadsheet. When you click As Spreadsheet, a Select Template window pops up. Click on the selected template and click the Export button. The file is saved in the directory \Data\KwikText\Project\Reports\xxx.txt, where xxx is the name of the template.

  7. As Text: Access from the Export menu item. Exports the material in the Composition Window in plain text format. When you click As Text, a Save window pops up. Type a name that you want to save the file to. The file is saved in the directory \Data\KwikText\Project\Reports\xxx.txt, where xxx is the name of the file you typed.

  8. AutoMark: Located above the Template Window. When you click AutoMark, all template nodes that contain the < mark > command will be marked.

  9. Bracketed Format: Access from the Format menu item. Reformats the material in the Composition Window to display bracketed items within brackets. Use for debugging your templates.

  10. Browser: Access from the Template Window toolbar. When selected, button is highlighted. If selected, when you click on a node that refers to a website, your browser will attempt to load the selected web page. Select this button when you are online and want to quickly access one or more web sites listed in a template.

  11. Cancel: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Located above the Editor Window. If you click Cancel, any changes you've made since you started editing will be ignored, and you will return to your original task.

  12. Case Sensitive: Located on the Search Projects toolbar. When selected, button is highlighted. When selected a search will find terms only if case matches as well as spelling. For example, with Case Sensitive selected, a search for "The" will find "The" and "Theater", but will not find "the" or "theater". If you click the button again, searches are not case sensitive.

  13. Clear: Located above the Template Window. Unmarks the current node. If the current node is the only marked node in this category, then its parent is unmarked also.

  14. Clear All: Located above the Template Window. Unmarks all template nodes. In effect this clears the Composition Window.

  15. Clear Sub: Access from the Marks menu item. Unmarks the current node and all its subnodes.

  16. Clipboard: This button occurs in two locations: Above the Content Window and above the Composition Window. Clicking Clipboard highlights the button and makes the associated window act as a clipboard. Whatever is in the window is sent to the system clipboard, ready to be pasted as needed. Anytime the content of the window changes, the system clipboard changes as well. In other words, you won't have to press Ctrl-C to copy text to the clipboard.

  17. Clipboard Off: Access from the Preferences menu item. Turns off KwikText clipboards. No material will be sent to the system clipboard until you click on one of the Clipboard buttons.

  18. Collect Text: Access from the Preferences menu item. When this box is checked, the content of marked nodes is automatically collected and formatted in the Composition Window. Unchecking this box stops the collection process.

  19. Composition Clipboard: Access from the Preferences menu item. When this box is checked, the Composition Window acts as the system clipboard. The Clipboard button on the Composition Window will be highlighted.

  20. Content Clipboard: Access from the Preferences menu item. When this box is checked, the Content Window acts as the system clipboard. The Clipboard button on the Content window will be highlighted.

  21. Current Project: Access from the Search Project Window toolbar. When selected, the button is highlighted. When you start a new search all templates in the current project are searched.

  22. Cursor Jump: Access from the Preferences menu item. When the Cursor Jump box is checked and you click on a node that contains a "reminder" command, the cursor jumps to the reminder in the Content Window, ready for you to begin typing.

  23. Delete Project: To access, click on the Project button on the Project Bar. When you click on Delete Project everything related to the current project is deleted. Be careful when selecting this choice, because deleted material cannot be retrieved.

  24. Delete Session: To access, click on the Session button on the Session Bar. When you click on Delete Session all records related to the current session are deleted. Be careful when selecting this choice, because deleted material cannot be retrieved.

  25. Delete Subject: To access, click on the Subject button on the Subject Bar. When you click on Delete Subject all records related to the current subject are deleted. Be careful when selecting this choice, because deleted material cannot be retrieved.

  26. Delete Template: To access, click on the Template button on the Template Bar. When you click on Delete Template all records using the current template are deleted. Be careful when selecting this choice, because deleted material cannot be retrieved.

  27. Despace: Access from Template Editor or Supplemental Editor menu: Select Modifications, then select from the drop-down list of alternatives. When Despace is checked, material that is pasted or inserted into a template will have extraneous leading and following spaces removed.

  28. Done: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Located above the Editor Window. When you click Done, your work will be saved and you will return to your original task.

  29. Edit File: Access from the Edit menu item. Lets you edit a file that will be inserted when you click on a node with the < file = xxx > command. When you click the Edit File button, a window pops up letting you select the name of the file to be edited. Select a file by clicking on its name or typing a new name in the File Name box.

  30. Edit Selection List: Access from the Edit menu item. Lets you edit a file that contains a list of selections that pop up when you click on a node with the < list = xxx > command. When you click the Edit File button, a window pops up letting you select the name of the file to be edited. Select a file by clicking on its name or typing a new name in the File Name box.

  31. Edit Subject List: Access from the Edit menu item or select from the popup menu that appears after you click the Subject button. Lets you edit a file that contains a list of subjects that appear in the Subject box. When you click the Edit Subject List button, a Subject List Editor pops up and lets you type a list of subjects. You can use any format you wish but should be consistent. After you've finished typing your list, click Done and a window will pop up where you can enter the name of the list. Note that you must have the Use List box checked if you want to use the list for selections,

  32. Edit Supplement: Access from the Edit menu item. Lets you edit one or more templates. Each time you click the Edit Supplement button, a new template editor pops up. Use this option to copy and paste from one template to another.

  33. Edit Template: Located above the Template Window. Lets you edit the current template. When you click the Edit Template button, the template editor pops up with the current template loaded and displayed, ready for you to begin editing.

  34. Help: Access from the Help menu item. Displays the help files from KwikText using your current browser.

  35. Indent: Available only when editing a template. Located above the Editor Window. Click Indent to move all selected text one space to the right. To indent multiple lines, click any place in the first line, then hold down the shift key and click any place in the last line. Then click Indent. To indent a single line, click any place in the line, then click Indent. To reverse the process, click Unindent.

  36. Insert As Block: Access from Template Editor or Supplemental Editor menu: Select Inserts, then select from the drop down list of alternatives. When checked, inserted text (using Ctrl-V) is inserted essentially as is. That is, it is inserted without changing it to single or multiple paragraphs. The inserted text can be supplemented by clicking on one of the adjacent Modifications button.

  37. Insert As Multiple Paragraphs: Access from Template Editor or Supplemental Editor menu: Select Inserts, then select from the drop down list of alternatives. When this box is checked and you insert a large block of text from a web page or other document, each paragraph is inserted as a separate template node. When you select this option, you usually also want to have Add Brackets and perhaps Add Acquisition Number checked as well.

  38. Insert As Single Paragraph: Access from Template Editor or Supplemental Editor menu: Select Inserts, then select from the drop down list of alternatives. Lets you insert multiple lines of text as a single paragraph. Use this option when you are pasting multiple lines of text from a web site or other document into a template and you want the text to appear as a single node. When you select this option, you usually also want to have Add Brackets and perhaps Add Acquisition Number checked as well.

  39. Load: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Located above the Editor Window. Lets you edit another file. When you click Load, a Load window pops up. Click on the name of the file you want to load, or type a new name in the File Name box. Then click the Load button and your file will be loaded into the editor ready for you to begin editing.

  40. New: Located on Project, Template, Subject, and Session Bars. Click New to create a new item.

  41. New: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Located above the Editor Window. Lets you edit a new file. When you click New, the Editor Window is cleared, ready for you to begin typing. When you are done, a Save window will pop up. Enter the name of the file you want to give to the new document.

  42. Next: Located on Project, Template, Subject, and Session Bars. Click Next to display the next item in the corresponding list, if available.

  43. No Format: Located above the Composition Window. Lets you display the material in the Composition Window without any special formatting.

  44. Outline Format: Located above the Composition Window. Lets you display the material in the Composition Window as in outline format. Use Outline Format to display lists.

  45. Override Prefs: Available only when editing a template. Lets you temporarily override the insertion preferences. Click this button when you want to copy and paste blocks of text from within the template editor itself. Then click the button again to resume inserting text, usually from a web site or other document, with acquisition numbers and brackets.

  46. Print: Located above the Composition Window. Prints the contents of the Composition Window, as currently formatted.

  47. Prior: Located on Project, Template, Subject, and Session Bars. Click Prior to display the prior item in the corresponding list, if available.

  48. Project: Located on the Project Bar. When clicked, provides options to delete or rename the current project.

  49. Redo: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Used in conjunction with Undo. This reverses a prior undo action. You can click it for up to 100 prior changes. Nothing happens if there are no changes to undo.

  50. Register: Access from the Help menu item. Lets you register your version of KwikText. A message will be displayed if you have already registered.

  51. Remove Brackets: Located above the Content Window. When selected, Remove Brackets is highlighted, and from that point on, content sent to the system clipboard will have all angle brackets (which usually indicate inner commands) removed. You can turn this option off by clicking Remove Brackets again.

  52. Rename Project: To access, click on the Project button on the Project bar. Lets you rename the current project. All records related to the revised project name will be revised.

  53. Rename Subject: To access, click on the Subject button on the Subject bar. Lets you rename the current subject. All records related to the revised subject name will be revised.

  54. Rename Template: To access, click on the Template button on the Template bar. Lets you rename the current template. All records related to the revised template name will be revised.

  55. Restore: Located above the Content Window. Lets you restore the original content, as it was before you made changes. Click Restore if you don't like the changes you've made to the content.

  56. Save: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Located above the Editor Window. Saves the current file. Click Save when you've made changes that you want to assure are saved. You should also click Save before you load a new file or begin editing a new file.

  57. Save As: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Located above the Editor Window. Lets you save the current file with a new name. After you save a file under a new name, it becomes the file you are currently editing.

  58. Search: Located at the bottom of the Template Window. Lets you search the current template for a word or phrase. The search finds terms if they are anywhere in the node's text: label, content or command. Searches are case-insensitive, which means that upper and lower case is ignored. When you click the Search button, the program searches from the beginning of the template for the words in the adjacent text box. If a search term is found, the node that it's in will be selected. To search again, press the Next button. If the search term is not found, the Next button changes to Not Found and fades to indicate that it can't be clicked again. You can also begin a search by typing your search term in the text box and pressing Enter.

  59. Search: Located at the bottom of the Search Project pop-up window. When clicked, the program searches for the word or phrase in the adjacent text box. Extent of the search depends on whether Search All Projects or Search Current Project is selected. Case sensitivity depends on whether Case Sensitive is selected or not. You can change any of these buttons, then click Search again to repeat the search using the new criteria. Results of the search are displayed in a table. When you click on a line in the table, the appropriate template is loaded, the appropriate node selected, and the node's content is sent to the system clipboard.

  60. Search All Projects: Access from the Search menu item. Pops up the Search Project Window, with the All Projects button selected so you can search all templates in all projects.

  61. Search Current Project: Access from the Search menu item. Pops up the Search Project Window, with the Current Project button selected so you can limit your search the templates in the current project.

  62. Search Project: Located above the Template Window. Lets you search the templates in all or just the current project for a word or phrase. When you click Search Project, a Search Project window pops up. Type your search terms in the Search box and press Enter. The window will list each template node that contains your search term. A search finds terms anywhere in the template: label, content or commands, including hidden nodes (preceded with #). Each result line will contain the project, template, and node content. When you click on a line in the Search Project window, the template that contains the selected text will be loaded and the appropriate node selected. When you're done searching, close the Search Project window by clicking on the X icon, or minimize it by clicking on the - icon. The results of your search will remain until the next search.

  63. Select Subject List: Select from the popup list displayed after you click the Subject button. When you click Select Subject List, a window pops up that lets you select a list name from a directory of names. You can either click on one of the listed names, or type a new name in the File Name box. You don't have to include a file name extension. The extension ".txt" is added automatically. Note that the box Use List must be checked to actually use the selected list. Otherwise names are listed based on prior records.

  64. Sentence Format: Located above the Composition Window. Displays the material in the Composition Window as sentences and paragraphs. Use Sentence Format when you want to create reports, specifications or other documents.

  65. Session: Located on the Session Bar. When clicked, provides option to delete the current session.

  66. Slash First: Located above the Content Window. Button is highlighted when selected. When selected, inserts the first term of any "slash command" when the node's content is displayed. The second term is ignored. For example, if a node contains [< He/She > is doing fine], then the content will be displayed as "He is doing fine". Slash First remains in effect until Slash Last is selected.

  67. Slash Last: Located above the Content Window. Button is highlighted when selected. When selected, inserts the last term of any "slash command" when the node's content is displayed. The first term is ignored. For example, if a node contains [< He/She > is doing fine], then the content will be displayed as "She is doing fine". Slash Last remains in effect until Slash First is selected.

  68. Sort by Content: Located in the Search Project toolbar. When clicked, sorts the results of a search by node content. To return the results to the original order, press the Search button. Note that searches are originally sorted by Project, Template, then Node Content.

  69. Subject: Located on the Subject Bar. When clicked, provides options to delete or rename the current subject, plus select or edit a subject list.

  70. Template: Located on the Template Bar. When clicked, provides options to delete or rename the current template. Also gives access to the Search Project and Edit Template buttons.

  71. Template Format: Located above the Composition Window. Displays the material in the Composition Window just as it is in the original template, except only selected nodes are included. Use Template Format when you want to find out why something isn't being displayed as you expect.

  72. Undo: Available only when editing a template, selection list, or file. Lets you undo character insertions or deletions. Up to 100 actions can be undone.

  73. Unindent: Available only when editing a template. Located above the Editor Window. Click Unindent to move all selected text one space to the left. To unindent a single line, click any place in the line, and then click Unindent. To unindent multiple lines, click any place in the first line, then hold down the shift key and click any place in the last line. Then click Unindent. If any of the selected lines is already at the left margin, the unindent process automatically terminates so your indentation levels remain unchanged.

  74. Update: Available only when editing a template. Located above the Editor Window. Clicking updates the template with the most recent changes. Lets you modify the template, see, and use the results without closing the editor.

  75. Use Directory: Access from the drop-down list displayed after you press the Subject button. When selected, the box is checked. When selected, names in the subject box are chosen by selecting all names that have a record.

  76. Use List: Access from the drop-down list displayed after you press the Subject button. When selected, the box is checked. When selected, names in the subject box are based on one of the lists you created using the Subject List Editor. You can select the list to use by selecting the Select Subject List item.

  77. View License: Access from the Help menu item. When you first used KwikText, you agreed to conform to this license. This gives you a chance to review the agreement.

  78. Wrap Text: Available only when editing a template. Located above the Template Editor window. Lets you view each template entry as either a long single line of text or a series of text lines arranged so they all fit the width of your screen. Unwrapping lines helps you understand and compare groups of entries more easily. Wrapping lines helps you read single entries more easily.
