1. Download

Note: In order to run KwikText, you must have Java version 1.3 or later installed on your computer. You can get Java for free from Sun's web site.

You might already have Java installed on your computer. To find out, open a DOS window, type "java -version", and press Enter. Here are detailed instructions:

Click on the Windows Start button.
Click on the Run icon.
Type "command " in the Open box, then click OK. A window labeled MS-DOS Prompt will appear.
Type "java -version" and press Enter. There has to be a dash before version.
If you have Java on your computer the screen will display the version number followed by some additional information. If you don't have Java installed, the screen will display a message like "Bad command or file name".

If your computer displays either:

java version "1.3.0" or
java version "1.4.0" or a similar message

You don't need to install a new version of Java. Just download KwikText.

Don't forget to close the DOS window by clicking on its X button.

Download and Install Java

The latest version of Java (1.4) is available for free from Sun's web site. Click on the link below, then follow Sun's instructions. Java takes about 30 minutes to download using a 56K modem.

Sun's web page will install three pieces of Java software on your computer: (1) The Java Runtime Environment, (2) the Java Virtual Machine, and (3) Java Web Start. You need only the Java Runtime Environment to run KwikText, but it's worth having the other programs as well.

A few notes:

On Sun's Get Java page, click the Download now. It's free! button.
On Sun's installation page, select the Windows (U.S. English only) version.
You will have to agree to Sun's license before you can complete the installation process.
When the File Download box pops up, click Open, and Sun's software program will complete the installation.

KwikText takes less than 2 minutes to download using a 56K modem.

The download process will place a file called "kwiktext.jar" on your computer. If you have Java installed, you can run KwikText by locating the file and double-clicking on the file name.

KwikText help files are compressed and packaged in a single "zip" file. The program automatically expands the zip file when help is first accessed.

The download process will place the selected zip file on your computer. Put it in the same directory as the KwikText program. KwikText zip files and jar files must be in the same directory to function properly.
