5. Time Series
If you have to evaluate things at different time intervals, use KwikText sessions.
KwikText lets you:
- Export your results to a spreadsheet or text file.
- Add date and time commands that are filled in when you load the template.
Here's an example for measuring heights of plants over time. This is what the results look like when exported as a spreadsheet:
Here's what the KwikText screen looks like while entering data:
The template looks like this:
I added some commands in the template:
- "mark" command, so I can click AutoMark to mark most of the nodes automatically.
- "date" and "time" command, so I don't have to enter them manually.
- "show" command because I want the labels to be included with the display.
- The blank reminder command, so I am prompted to enter a height.
To record a new measurement:
- Click "New" session button.
- Click "AutoMark". The plant name, date and time will be filled in automatically.
- Click the "Height" node and enter the height where the cursor indicates.
After I've recorded some measurements, I can export the results to an Excel spreadsheet:
- Click "Reports", then "Spreadsheet".
- Select the template to export by clicking on its name. In this case it is called "Measurements".
- Click "Export".
- Start your spreadsheet program and click "File", then "Open".
- Navigate to the appropriate directory. In this case it would be under the KwikText/TimeSeries/Reports folder.
- Change the "Files of type" box to display "All Files". The file you want to import is a simple text file and it won't show up unless you do this.
- Double-click the file to import. In this case, it's called "Measurements.txt".
- Click "Finish" in Excel's Text Import window that pops up. Your records are now imported and can be managed as an ordinary spreadsheet.
